LIPOR’s Environmental Education goes to the beach!

Throughout July, LIPOR is promoting a series of environmental awareness activities as part of the Environmental Education Programme of the Blue Flag 2026, bringing sustainability education to the beaches of Espinho, Matosinhos and Porto. The aim is to engage younger audiences in understanding the importance of recycling and adopting environmentally responsible behaviours, through participatory activities that combine learning with fun.

The activities are inspired by the United Nations 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular emphasis on SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 (Life on Land). Among the activities, the Sustainability Game stands out, challenging participants to reflect creatively and dynamically on the impact of their choices on the environment. Through this activity, LIPOR seeks to inspire behavioural change and demonstrate that small everyday actions can make a significant difference to the present and future of communities.

These initiatives align with the mission of the Blue Flag Programme, which promotes environmental education, the protection of coastal, river and lake ecosystems, and the sustainable use of these spaces. The programme also encourages the involvement of local communities, the training of tourism professionals and the adoption of good environmental practices by all beach users.

Oceans and coastal areas play an essential role in people’s quality of life, being fundamental for biodiversity, climate regulation, food, tourism, leisure and the economy. Raising awareness among younger generations about their preservation is therefore a decisive step towards ensuring a more sustainable future.

Inspired by the LIPOR Lifestyle, these initiatives create moments of learning, reflection and transformation, promoting responsible behaviour and greater environmental awareness within the community.

The Blue Flag Programme annually recognises beaches and marinas that meet high standards of environmental quality, management, safety and sustainability education, and is today one of the most internationally recognised references in promoting sustainable development.
