Santa Cruz do Bispo Prison’s electric composter has processed around 63 t of biowaste in 2025
In 2025, the Santa Cruz do Bispo Prison Establishment received an electric composter, installed through a partnership between LIPOR, Matosinhos City Council and the Directorate‑General for Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP). The equipment strengthened the establishment’s commitment to the sustainable management of the biowaste generated daily in the facilities.
Based on the Portuguese Environment Agency’s methodology for calculating recycling at source, the electric composter has already processed around 63 t of biowaste. Every day are prepared 11110 meals, and the food waste produced in the establishment is transformed into high‑quality compost, which is applied in the community garden and green areas of the unit.
This result demonstrates, in concrete terms, the impact of an initiative that combines environmental recovery of waste with the promotion of sustainable habits within the prison environment.
