Citizens of Lipor's eight municipalities set new Recycling records

In 2021, LIPOR received around 106 455 tonnes of materials from Door-to-Door Selective Collection, Proximity Collection with conditioned access containers, Eco-bins and Drop-off sites, which means a growth of +6.5% compared to 2020.

Thus, in 2021, LIPOR received 63 162 tonnes of materials for recycling* at its Sorting Plant and Platforms and 43 293 tonnes of bio-waste (food waste and green waste) at the Composting Plant.

Excellent news is the decrease in the production of mixed waste for the second consecutive year, to 384 855 tonnes (-2.4% compared to 2020), of which only 1.2% of the total production was landfilled. LIPOR took the most of its potential by valuing it in its Waste-to-Energy Plant, which allowed, in 2021, exporting to EDP national grid, around 158 GWh of electricity.

These values are the result of the strong investment and commitment that LIPOR and the associated Municipalities have been developing to maximize and increase the amount of materials to be valorised.

Lipor products, namely recyclables, paper and cardboard, plastics, glass and metals, NutrimaisTM Organic Compost and exported Electric Energy, had a positive impact in reducing emissions into the atmosphere of around 104 326 tCO2e (see Note 1), which represents the carbon sequestration of more than ten million and four hundred thousand trees.

LIPOR managed, in just over 20 years, to create a Waste Valorisation and Treatment System, with environmental standards of international excellence, which eliminated all the waste dumps in the region and reduced the landfilling to minimum values, valuing practically 100% of its waste, improving the quality of life of more than 1 million inhabitants of Greater Porto area. LIPOR will keep investing in prevention, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, decarbonization and in more modern systems and infrastructure for waste treatment and the consequent elimination of landfilling.

Note 1: Indirect impact (avoided emissions) of LIPOR products that contribute to the replacement of more carbon-intensive activities: 1) Use of recyclables in economic activities (which avoid the production of virgin materials); 2) Application of the NUTRIMAIS compost (which replaces the production of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers); and, 3) Electric production by fossil fuels.
