Sustainability Within Doors in the municipality of Matosinhos

The Atelier Project aims to link Smart Cities with energy efficiency, mobility and integration of renewable energies

The Atelier Project is a partnership established with the cities of Amsterdam and Bilbao (leaders), with Matosinhos, Budapest, Riga, Copenhagen, Bratislava and Krakow as partner cities. It is financed by the European Commission through Horizon 2020 - Community Framework Programme for Research & Innovation, which aims to link Smart Cities with energy efficiency, mobility and integration of renewables. This project has a duration of 60 months. Its implementation is intended to define an action plan for the decarbonisation of the municipality by 2050.

This first phase of the project includes the preparation of studies, which are based on all the information that will be shared by the project itself. AdEPorto supports the municipality in monitoring the technical studies and in the preparation of plans to replicate the initiatives carried out by the lead cities, also providing support in the administrative and financial management of the project, including the preparation of interim reports. The budget for "Matosinhos" is 541,906.75 euros, of which 371,718.75 euros are for expenses of the Municipality and 170,188.00 euros for expenses of AdEPorto. The Municipality's expenses are 100% funded and include costs with staff assigned to the project (150,625.00 euros), operating costs (74,343.75 euros) and provision of services (146,750.00 euros).

The theme of this application will be the realization of an investment concept to put into operation and produce energy in the mills located in the area adjacent to the river Leça valley (+/- 18 Km), as well as the distribution of this energy to the public lighting network and the docks for charging bicycles, which will be installed near the metro stations of Esposade, Araújo and Custió.

Two PED - Positive Energy District pilot zones were defined and characterized, namely the Custió neighbourhood and the stretch of the Leça River between the Ponte da Pedra and the Ponte do Carro, which corresponds to the first 2 phases of the Leça Green Corridor project. The first phase of the project includes the Lionesa business centre and the connections to the metro stations of Esposade, Araújo and Custió are located in the second phase of the project.

The Lionesa Business Centre will be an important partner in the PED pilot, in Matosinhos, with the aim of implementing an energy community based on photovoltaic technologies, integrated with electric mobility solutions, promoting the involvement of private companies that will work in partnership with the owner of Lionesa, the City Council and AdEPorto.
The geo-referencing of the buildings in the municipality of Matosinhos was carried out in April 2021 with a view to characterising their current energy consumption profile and the possibility of forecasting future scenarios. This information will be fundamental for the City Vision 2050.
