LIPOR recognizes initiatives within the scope of the 2023 European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR)
During the Training Program for the 2024 European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), held on October 1st at Casa do Corim, LIPOR awarded the initiatives submitted for the European Waste Prevention Awards for the 2023 edition.
The Parish Council of Ermesinde, the Porto School of Hospitality and Tourism, Gertal, and Albergues do Porto are the entities whose actions were selected to represent LIPOR's area of influence, among the 190 actions carried out in the Associated Municipalities during the 15th European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) in 2023.
LIPOR’s selection followed the same criteria defined by the jury of the European Trophies, including the initiative’s alignment with the EWWR themes, originality, innovative nature, adaptability and replicability in other contexts, target audience engagement, and duration.
The actions submitted for the European Trophies in the different categories were:
- Category "Administration/Public Authority" | Parish Council of Ermesinde with the initiative "Fruits and vegetables are BFFs and share the same bag", reusable bags were distributed at the Ermesinde Municipal Market during the European Week for Waste Reduction to encourage this practice among citizens.
- Category "Company" | Gertal with the initiative "Good practices for waste prevention", posters aimed at three distinct audiences – children (schools), consumers (companies), and staff in school and company cafeterias – were used to reinforce measures for managing and preventing food waste, as well as to provide useful tips for both children and adults in their daily lives.
- Category "Educational Institutions" | Porto School of Hospitality and Tourism (EHTP) with the initiative "Take me home," meals were made available for students to take home for dinner. The initiative aims to reduce food waste and address social vulnerability situations at the EHTP.
- Category "NGO" | Albergues do Porto in partnership with LIPOR, a Repair Café was organized where small household appliances brought by the public were repaired. The volunteer repairers were residents of Albergues do Porto, who are part of the Repairers Club – CREW.
This year, the LIPOR Training Program for the EWWR had a special surprise, as Cristina Ferreira from LIPOR moved the set of the "Receitas da Praça da Alegria" TV show to Casa do Corim, with a live broadcast on RTP.
In 2024, the 16th edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction will take place from November 16th to 24th, with the central theme focusing on fighting food waste. Registration is already open and can be done at https://ewwr.eu/take-part/.
