LIPOR’s Energy Recovery Plant Celebrates 25 Years

Over 4673 GWh of energy produced

Waste production is an inevitable consequence of modern times and society's evolution.

In the past 25 years, LIPOR’s associated municipalities have generated over 10.3 million tons of waste.

To accommodate this amount of waste, thousands of hectares of land would have been required for landfilling - wasting valuable resources with no benefit. We are a manifesto against the Landfill, the burying, the forgetting.

25 years ago, we believed it was worthy to follow a different path. We dared and transformed waste into resources. We move forward with  an innovative project - the LIPOR Energy Recovery Plant - producing energy that can power a city of 150,000 inhabitants daily. This is our commitment to the Circular Economy! We choose to invest in prevention, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, decarbonization, and the development of increasingly modern waste recovery systems and infrastructure, leading to the elimination of landfills.

25 years later, we are proud of how far we’ve come. 25 years later, we remain dedicated to building a more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and responsible community.

And there’s still more to come! By fostering collaboration, value-sharing, and synergies, we are now launching a Shared Energy Community – the ENNO: Energia Partilhada.

LIPOR – 25 Years of Energy Production!

Key Data from 25 Years of Operation of the Energy Recovery Plant:

  •   Total energy produced: 4,673 GWh (13% used for self-consumption);
  •   Energy supplied: 4,022 GWh (equivalent to 415 kWh per ton of waste treated);
  •    tCO₂e emissions avoided: 1.68 million tons of CO₂e;
  •   Total waste recovered: 9,703 million tons treated.
