LIPOR participates in the I National Conference on Sustainable and Smart Cities

On June 3 and 4, 2025, the I National Conference on Sustainable and Smart Cities took place at the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Coimbra, bringing together experts, researchers, and public and private entities to discuss innovative solutions for sustainable urban development.

LIPOR was present with the presentation "Urban Waste Management as one of the Pillars for Sustainable Cities", authored by Isabel Félix and Luciana Rocha. The study highlighted the importance of efficient waste management as an essential element in building truly sustainable cities.

Through our strategy based on sustainability pillars, we have promoted waste prevention and recycling, fostering resource circularity and active community participation.

One of the initiatives showcased was the Specialised Technical Support Program in Waste Management, which in 2024 involved 500 organisations, resulting in the installation of 4,270 recycling equipment, the removal or conversion of 1,200 waste bins, and the recycling of 4,430 tons of waste. These efforts helped avoid the emission of approximately 2,927 tons of CO₂eq, corresponding to the circulation of 1,126 cars for a year.

The presentation emphasized that urban sustainability requires concrete actions in waste management, with recycling being a crucial pathway for reintegrating materials into value chains and mitigating climate change.
