Preliminary and environmental impact studies for the CITRES Project officially start on Maio Island
Work has begun on the Preliminary Study for the implementation of CITRES – Integrated Center for the Collection and Treatment of Solid Waste on Maio Island, Cape Verde—and, consequently, on the Environmental Impact Study, following approval of the Preliminary Study.
The purpose of the Preliminary Studies and the Environmental Impact Study is to assess the potential impacts of the project’s implementation on the surrounding environment and local community, contributing to more informed, sustainable decisions aligned with the principles of the circular economy, always bearing in mind that this island has been a UNESCO recognized World Biosphere Reserve since 2020.
The kick off meeting was attended by Lipor, as the technical implementation partner, by Camões, I.P., and by the firm responsible for carrying out the studies.
From July 8 to 11, a technical mission took place on Maio Island with the aim of deepening understanding of the local context, collecting on site data, and consulting the main institutional and community stakeholders. This participatory approach will enable better adaptation of the proposed solutions to the island’s environmental, social, and economic realities.
The CITRES Project now enters a decisive phase!
The CITRES Project is co financed by the European Union and by Portuguese Cooperation, through Camões, I.P., which also ensures project coordination under the framework of delegated cooperation.
