LIPOR and FEUP are developing a study on Local Composting
Make your Community more Sustainable from Home
Did you know that in 2024, more than 5 million tonnes of municipal waste were produced in Portugal? This corresponds to around 517 kg per inhabitant per year, or 1.4 kg per inhabitant per day, exceeding the previous year’s figure by 3.97 percent. The high production of municipal waste is harmful both to our health and to the environment.
Home composting is one possible solution to reduce the volume of municipal waste, particularly biowaste (food and garden waste). It is the natural process of decomposing organic materials, resulting in compost rich in nutrients, ready to improve the quality of your soil. Despite its benefits, home composting is still not widely adopted. For this reason, LIPOR has partnered with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) on a project to increase the uptake of this practice.
The project aims to understand the barriers and motivations behind composting and has the goal of designing a service that makes it easier for people to adopt this practice. To achieve this, we ask citizens collaboration by taking part in a questionnaire (page in portuguese) that will help identify these factors.
Join us in making composting a common practice and helping build a more sustainable society.
