LIPOR took part in the 2ND EU–US Circular Economy Forum
The EU Cities Gateway (2025–2029) is a programme funded by the European Union that builds connections between cities and regions in the European Union, the United States and Canada.
Building on the results of the International Urban and Regional Cooperation Programme and the Global Covenant of Mayors, EU Cities Gateway promotes practical cooperation, peer learning and joint innovation across four thematic pillars:
- Circular Economy
- Nature-Based Solutions
- Digitalisation and Urban Innovation
- Affordable Housing and Innovative Living Spaces
Through thematic networks, advanced study visits and collaborative projects, the programme addresses common urban challenges and strengthens transatlantic relationships between cities, civil society, academia and the private sector, aiming to develop joint solutions.
EU Cities Gateway held its first Thematic Networking Event on Circular Economy alongside the 2nd EU–US Circular Economy Forum. This event marked the launch of the EU Cities Gateway Circular Economy Thematic Cluster, hosted by and counting on the active participation of the city of Phoenix.
From 22 to 24 April 2026, cities and regions from the European Union, Canada and the United States — members of the Circular Economy Cluster — explored innovations in the host city, discussed challenges and best practices, and outlined plans for collaborative activities in the years ahead.
Phoenix, in the US state of Arizona, was chosen as host due to its strong track record in sustainable development and circular economy initiatives since 2011. Its experience and leadership place it in a privileged position to share knowledge and guide other entities within this thematic group. The city has four key plans setting targets for zero carbon emissions, zero waste, universal access to public transport, clean water and air, accessible parks, and dynamic local food systems by 2050.
European and North American cities took part in the thematic launch event on Circular Economy, which took place from 22 to 24 April and included:
- Visits to state-of-the-art waste recovery facilities and meetings with stakeholders on distinctive initiatives
- Meetings with representatives from the City of Phoenix departments regarding their pioneering programmes and initiatives
- An EU Cities Gateway workshop to identify opportunities for "communities of practice” for small-group collaborations, develop initial work plans and define a roadmap for the cluster’s future activities, as well as to advance concrete projects;
- Participation in the Second Circular Economy Forum, organised by TSTI, and networking opportunities.
LIPOR, through its International Business Division (DNI), took part in the event, sharing knowledge and learning from the experiences of other cities. The mission proved to be extremely enriching, with strong prospects for a highly successful programme and the delivery of meaningful outcomes.
