XXV Nutrition and Food Congress applies for LIPOR’s Green Heart Certification

The twenty fifth edition of the Nutrition and Food Congress is applying for the Green Heart Certification, a distinction awarded by LIPOR to events that integrate good environmental practices and actively promote sustainability.

This congress, organised by the Portuguese Nutrition Association, marks an important milestone by strengthening the integration of sustainability principles in its planning. It aligns with criteria such as efficient waste management, the promotion of the circular economy, social inclusion and environmental awareness.

As part of this application, the event incorporates a set of concrete measures aimed at reducing its environmental impact. These include food waste prevention, using reusable or sustainably sourced materials and selecting suppliers committed to responsible practices.

The organisation is also maintaining practices implemented in previous editions, such as coffee breaks designed to reduce food waste, ensuring that surplus food is channeled for donation and prioritising the use of reusable crockery, thereby minimising disposable materials.

In addition, the congress considers options that encourage sustainable mobility, namely by choosing accommodation and venues with easy access to public transportation and adequate accessibility conditions, promoting the inclusion of all participants.

This edition also includes initiatives such as collecting lanyards used during the event for future reuse, as well as tree planting activities that contribute to mitigating associated carbon emissions.

The application for the Green Heart Certification reflects the aim of recognising and valuing events that adopt more sustainable practices, encouraging their continuity and replication.
