ENNO consolidates its position as a national reference in collaborative energy transition

ENNO – Energias do Norte celebrates its first year of existence, marking twelve months dedicated to a new energy model in Portugal. Officially established on 16 May 2025, ENNO emerged as the largest Renewable Energy Community in the country, bringing together 28 founding entities - the municipalities of Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Paredes, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Santo Tirso, Trofa, Valongo and Vila do Conde; the municipal companies Ágora, Águas e Energia do Porto, Domus Social, Espaço Municipal, Maiambiente, Matosinhos Habit, Matosinhos Sport, Porto Ambiente, Porto Vivo SRU, STCP and Varzim Lazer; as well as organisations such as APDL, Casa da Arquitectura, São João Local Health Unit, ISEP, the Northern Regional Section of the Order of Architects, Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto and LIPOR itself - united by a common goal: transforming the way energy is produced, shared and consumed.

Throughout this first year, the community has achieved significant milestones that reinforce its status as a national benchmark project. A decisive milestone is the start of electricity distribution and sharing across Greater Porto. ENNO currently shares around 160 GWh of renewable electricity among 28 partner entities, through a model that integrates energy produced by LIPOR’s Energy Recovery Plant and by around 60 photovoltaic installations owned by its members. On the consumption side, the project supplies more than 9,000 facilities, demonstrating the scale and operational capacity of this energy community.

This model enables locally produced energy to be consumed locally, promoting greater energy efficiency, cost reductions of up to 30 percent, lower exposure to market volatility and a tangible contribution to carbon neutrality targets. At the same time, ENNO maintains a strong social dimension, reinforcing the commitment made since its creation to fight energy poverty and to build more inclusive and accessible solutions.

Promoted by LIPOR and developed in close collaboration with the Porto Energy Agency (AdEPorto), ENNO emerged as a pioneering project grounded in the principles of the circular economy, energy decentralisation and territorial sustainability.

The ENNO brand has also been recognised at the Lusophone Creativity Awards, in the categories of naming, branding and environment and sustainability, validating the project’s relevance and impact in terms of communication and strategic positioning.

One year after the signing of its deed, ENNO stands as a concrete example that the energy transition is achieved through collaboration between institutions, technology, innovation and a strong commitment to the territory. This first year represents only the beginning of a project that aims to keep growing and leading the energy transformation in Portugal.
