Results show progress but reinforce the challenge for the coming years - LIPOR Results 1st Half of 2026.
In the first half of 2026, LIPOR received approximately 35,219 tons of materials delivered for multi-material recycling of paper/cardboard, plastic, metal, and glass, originating from door-to-door and proximity collection with conditional access, as well as from Eco containers and Drop-of-sites, representing a growth of approximately +2.8% compared to the first half of 2025.
In our Sorting Units and Platforms, we received 9,073 tons of Packaging, registering a growth of +2.2% compared to the first half of 2025. In the case of Paper/Cardboard, we received 13,021 tons, representing an increase of +4.7%, and in the case of Glass, we received 11,209 tons, -0.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Within the framework of door-to-door and local selective collection of bio-waste, approximately 26,556 tons were collected, showing a slight variation of -1.2% compared to the first half of 2025. This variation results from different behaviours between waste streams: in the Food category, we received 14,110 tons, representing a slight increase of +0.1%, while in the green category, we received 12,446 tons, registering a decrease of -2.7%.
The production of waste by residents increased by +1.9% compared to the first half of 2025. Even so, LIPOR's integrated model allowed 185,768 tons to be sent for Energy Recovery, ensuring the production of 81,483 MWh of electricity for the national grid, generated at the Energy Recovery Plant. Only 4,357 tons were deposited in landfills.
The per capita collection rate was 117.8 kg per inhabitant/year, reflecting the system's performance in collection, recovery, and recycling (see Note 1).
LIPOR and its Associated Municipalities offer citizens a management system that treats waste as a resource, promoting value sharing, innovation, and the circular economy. We maintain our focus on prevention, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, decarbonization, and continuous investment in increasingly modern systems and infrastructure, with a view to the progressive elimination of landfills. The active collaboration of citizens has been, and will continue to be, fundamental to the success of this model.
However, the results achieved also show an unavoidable reality: the growth of recycling is beginning to demand a new impetus. The next challenge is to reach a wider segment of the population. We need to involve those who do not yet recycle consistently and continue to improve the quality of the materials sent for recycling. Recycling more remains a priority. But recycling better is equally essential.
The results achieved demonstrate that the progress made has been significant, but they also show that the effort needs to continue. Increasing the selective collection of glass, paper/cardboard, plastic, and metal, and, very significantly, bio-waste, will be crucial to achieving future goals.
