CITRES enters a decisive phase with the launch of the tender for the construction of the Integrated Centre

The CITRES Maio Project in Cabo Verde has entered a new and decisive phase with the launch of the public tender for the design and construction of the future Integrated Solid Waste Collection and Treatment Centre on Maio Island.

This milestone marks the transition towards the implementation of one of the project's key components, initiating the procurement process that will pave the way for the construction of the infrastructure forming the foundation of Maio Island's future integrated municipal waste management system.

As the implementing partner and waste management specialist, LIPOR International – Global Waste Management has played a central role throughout this journey, contributing its expertise in waste management and technical and strategic consultancy to the development and implementation of sustainable solutions tailored to the local context.

LIPOR International – Global Waste Management’s intervention has been developed through an integrated approach encompassing multiple dimensions essential to transforming the system. These include the definition of appropriate technical and technological solutions for waste collection, treatment, recovery and final disposal; capacity building for the various local stakeholders; the improvement and optimisation of waste management operations; stakeholder engagement; and community awareness-raising towards environmentally responsible practices. This approach contributes to the implementation of a more efficient, sustainable waste management system tailored to the specific context of Maio Island.

The tender, launched by Camões, I.P., covers both the preparation of the detailed design and the execution of the works. The planned activities include the construction of the new Centre, the supply and installation of all fixed and mobile equipment required for its operation, as well as the environmental clean-up and rehabilitation of the area currently occupied by the island’s landfill. CITRES MAIO is an action funded by the European Union, co-financed and managed by Camões, I.P., with LIPOR participating as the implementing partner and waste management specialist. Under implementation since 2024, the project aims to contribute to sustainable productive activities on Maio Island while ensuring the protection of water resources and its most fragile ecosystems.
