How to recycle organics and to feed our soils? A compost journey across Europe

Environmental and recycling businesses, organizations, researchers, and individuals around Europe are making plans to celebrate the Annual International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) coming up the week of May 2 - 8. Due to the restrictions of movement and gathering to protect people´s health and safety, ICAW must be celebrated predominately using social media and online webinars. However, it is done, the goal of the program is building awareness on the benefits of compost use and organics recycling for the society and natural soil and environment.

Compost is important for improving or maintaining high quality soil, growing healthy plants, reducing the use of chemical pesticides, improving water quality and protect the environment. Organics recycling plays a key role in keeping valuable materials out of landfills. This year, a collection of experiences from different European countries will be presented to promote the week. Recycle your organics…to save organics in soil is the motto for this year.

"The motto recognizes the opportunity for the agriculture to become more sustainable and achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal, Farm to Fork Strategy and Biodiversity Strategy. Circular movement of the organics recycling process flowing from farm to fork to farm again creates healthy soils leading to cleaner environment and more nutritious food. The never-ending cycle will always start again, once bio-waste is separately collected.” explained Stefanie Siebert, European Compost Network Executive Director.

International Compost Awareness Week, a program started in Canada in 1995 and constantly run by the Canadian Composting Council has continued to grow since then. Every year, more people, businesses, municipalities, administrations, schools, community groups and organizations are recognizing the importance of composting and the long-term benefits from organics recycling. This year, European compost producers and organizations will join the celebrations for compost.
