LIPOR reinforces its commitment to fight food waste
LIPOR and its associated municipalities reaffirm their commitment to combating food waste through various initiatives and social media campaigns aligned with the theme of the 2024 European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR).
According to Eurostat data, the European Union wastes more than 59 million tons of food per year, representing an economic loss of €132 billion. Aware of this alarming reality, LIPOR has been promoting a series of projects since 2008 aimed at reducing food waste, encouraging local food production, and raising awareness within the community about the importance of sustainability.
Among the key initiatives, LIPOR is currently implementing:
- Horta à Porta – with 61 active gardens, encouraging local and sustainable production.
- Dose Certa – a project already involving 64 restaurants, promoting meal size reductions in line with consumers' actual nutritional needs.
- Embrulha. – an initiative with 202 participating restaurants that encourages customers to take leftovers home, contributing to reducing food waste.
In September, through a digital communication campaign, LIPOR drew citizens' attention to the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, celebrated on the last Sunday, September 29. With this campaign, besides encouraging people to reflect on their eating habits, LIPOR shared the results of its work with various partner institutions, which together have avoided over 1,500 tons of food waste in just the first half of 2024.
October starts with a bang. On October 1, LIPOR will host, at Casa do Corim, a Training Program for Citizens and Organizations interested in registering activities for the 2024 European Week for Waste Reduction, which this year has the theme: "Food waste has no taste."
In October and November, the communication campaigns for the Dose Certa and Embrulha programs will take place. These campaigns, aimed at both restaurants and the public, seeking to increase the number of participating restaurants, contributing to the prevention of food waste and, consequently, the reduction of food losses.
These efforts will culminate in LIPOR's participation in the 2024 European Week for Waste Reduction, taking place from November 16 to 24. LIPOR has been the coordinator of this initiative in Northern Portugal since its first edition in 2008. With more than 3,110 actions recorded within LIPOR's area of influence over the past 16 years, the goal is to continue mobilizing and encouraging all sectors of society to join this cause.
During the EWWR, LIPOR will promote activities, workshops, and collaborative actions with various entities, all focused on responsible waste prevention and management, with a particular focus on fighting food waste.
In all its awareness campaigns and initiatives, LIPOR emphasizes the importance of small gestures that also reflect the LIPOR Lifestyle – a sustainable way of living that promotes Sustainable Communities.
