Energy

LIPOR processes approximately 500,000 tons of urban waste annually from its eight Associated Municipalities. Waste that is not recycled or composted is incinerated in a controlled manner, generating steam, which in turn is used to produce enough electricity to supply a city of 150,000 inhabitants daily. This energy is injected into the National Electric Grid, reducing imports and avoiding the use of fossil fuels for electricity production.
The future of the electricity sector is moving towards greater decentralization of production and a stronger focus on renewable energy-based electricity generation. This strategy emphasizes self-consumption solutions, active management of smart grids, and more active consumer participation in energy markets.
LIPOR is transitioning from being solely a waste management entity to becoming a producer of products and goods and a provider of specialized services, driving new platforms that foster a true circular economy.
The circular economy approach, which has long been a key part of LIPOR’s energy recovery project, is now being further strengthened with the establishment of ENNO – Energia do Norte, an intermunicipal energy community, marking another step in collaborative and synergistic efforts.
