Biowaste Composting Park and Microdigestion Unit

LIPOR's strategy for promoting the recovery of green and food waste, to facilitate the Circular Economy on the one hand, and the demanding goals and objectives of the European Union for Portugal, on the other hand, require a concerted effort from LIPOR and its Associated Municipalities, to grow in quantity and quality of materials with the potential to be recycled, transformed and valued.

In this sense, the development and construction of a Green Waste Composting Park in Laúndos plays a fundamental role in this entire strategy. This new Park has an area of 13,400 m2 and aims to locally treat green waste selectively collected in the municipalities of Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde, respecting an integrated and circular approach to bio-waste.

The Laúndos Composting Park has a green waste reception capacity of 8,000 tons/year, corresponding to a compost production capacity of over 2,000 tons/year, thus responding to the challenges that the National Waste Management Plan, the PERSU 2030, defines for LIPOR.

At the same time, a Waste Microdigestion Unit was installed in the Póvoa de Varzim Transfer Station area. This Unit will aim to locally recover food waste from selective collection in the municipality, in the residential and non-residential sectors (HORECA establishments), serving around 18,000 inhabitants, with a nominal capacity of 2.5 tons/day of food waste, around 900 tons/year.

These two new Units were financed by POSEUR - Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources Operational Program.
