BIOSHOES4ALL

Innovation and training in the footwear sector for a sustainable bioeconomy.
The integrated Project BioShoes4All – Innovation and training of the footwear sector for a sustainable bioeconomy, is led by the Portuguese Footwear Association, Components, Leather Goods and Substitutes (APICCAPS) and has the participation of 70 entities from different sectors, such as design, biological resources, leather, polymers, composites, chemical products, machine manufacturers, communication and information technologies, logistics, waste recovery, market visionaries, retailers and manufacturers of footwear and leather goods.

With the goal of promoting the transition of the footwear sector towards a bio-economy and circular economy, BioShoes4All aims to induce a radical change in the materials, technologies, processes and products of footwear and leather goods, producing knowledge and results, namely:
  • New bio and eco materials, components and production processes;
  • Footwear, leather goods: functional, durable, circular, with a smaller environmental footprint;
  • Advanced and digital production technologies (automation, robotization, in-situ recycling...);
  • Solutions for the recovery of production waste and post-consumer products;
  • Reducing the environmental footprint of the sector and its products consumption (carbon, water, fossil products, chemicals);
  • Implementation of industrial pilot lines, dissemination, and demonstration of innovations;
  • Promotion of training in the sector, development of contents, actions and initiatives;
  • Consumer involvement and awareness promoting sustainable consumption;
  • Broad promotion of the footwear sector in the bioeconomy and circular economy (nationally and internationally).

BioShoes4All is based on 5 Pillars:
  • Biomaterials;
  • Ecological footwear;
  • Circular economy;
  • Advanced production technologies;
  • Training and promotion.

LIPOR leads one of the measures of Pillar 3 – Circular Economy – where it will be developed a management model study for post-consumer footwear and post-consumer footwear waste, based on the principles of the circular economy, identifying opportunities for environmental protection and technologies, contributing to the development and implementation of solutions that promote prevention, waste minimization and the selective collection and reuse of materials.

In addition, a characterization study will also be carried out on post-consumer footwear waste in urban waste and footwear deposited in specific equipment with the aim of its future reuse and recycling.

Project duration:
July 1, 2022 to December 31, 2025

Co-financing:

Co-financed by Component 12 – Promotion of a Sustainable Bioeconomy, integrated in the Climate Transition Dimension of the Recovery and Resilience Plan within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR) of the European Union (EU), framed in the Next Generation EU, for the period of 2021 – 2026.
