Recycling Increases in the LIPOR System

Citizens of LIPOR’s eight municipalities united in Recycling

In 2023, LIPOR received around 68,028 t of materials delivered for multi-material recycling of paper/cardboard, plastic, metal and glass, coming from Door-to-Door Selective Collection, Proximity with conditioned access collection, Eco-bins and Drop-off sites, which represents a growth of +3% compared to 2022.

Coming from the Selective Collection of Bio-waste and as a result of the expansion of Door-to-Door and Proximity Collection with conditioned access projects for food waste and green waste flows, LIPOR received 51,889 t, which represents an increase of +8 % compared to last year.

These results validate the strong investment and commitment of LIPOR and its Associated Municipalities in maximizing and increasing, in quantity and quality, the materials to be sent for Recycling and Organic Valorisation, with citizen involvement being crucial in the process. It is worth highlighting the significant growth in the quantity of food waste selectively collected in the residential sector, resulting of the strong commitment of the 8 LIPOR Municipalities to Door-to-Door and Proximity collection with conditioned access systems.

An excellent result is the decrease in citizens' waste production by -1.2%, which represents 4,519 t less when compared to 2022. LIPOR sent 362,933 t for Energy Recovery, which allowed, in 2023, exporting to the EDP's national grid a total of 163,182 MWh of electrical energy. 11,546 t of waste were deposited in the landfill, which represented just 2% of the waste produced in the eight Associated Municipalities.

LIPOR products - namely Recyclables (paper and cardboard, plastics, glass and metals), Nutrimais® Organic Compost and Substrates and exported Electricity - had a positive impact on reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in other economic sectors in the order of 105,000 tCO2e (see Note 1), which is equivalent to the GHG emissions associated with the annual circulation of 40 thousand cars.

The LIPOR Project and the Associated Municipalities provide to citizens a Waste Recovery System with environmental parameters of international excellence, which has eliminated all landfills in the region, preventing the deposition of waste in landfills at minimum values, thus valuing practically 100% of their waste, improving the quality of life of more than 1 million inhabitants of Greater Porto area. LIPOR wants to keep investing in prevention, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, decarbonization and in increasingly more modern waste treatment systems and infrastructures and the consequent elimination of landfills.

Note 1: Indirect impacts (avoided emissions) of Lipor products that compete to replace more carbon-intensive activities: 1) Use of recyclables in economic activities (which avoid the use of virgin industrial materials); 2) Application of the Nutrimais® compost (which replaces the production of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers); and, 3) Electrical production using fossil fuels.
