The Rolha a Semeie Recolha (Cork by cork, sow the collection) campaign continues to promote the collection of cork corks and the planting of trees in Porto

A symbolic planting of 150 trees took place on the morning of March 6, in Porto Parque da Cidade. This action also includes the campaign Rolha a Semeie Recolha (Cork by cork, sow the collection) and included the participation of students from Escola E.B. dos Correios and the vice-president of Porto City Council, and LIPOR Administrator Filipe Araújo.

The campaign "Cork the cork, sow the collection", operated by the municipal company Porto Ambiente in partnership with LIPOR, Quercus and the participating commercial establishments, also includes Amorim, Extruplás and BA Glass as partner companies.
As part of the campaign's motto, an indigenous tree is planted for every 50 corks collected. The project in the municipality of Porto began in 2023 and already resulted in the collection of 337.7 kg of cork stoppers, equivalent to around 67,500 units, which translated into approximately 1,350 new trees.

The new trees will be planted in parks and streets across the city, joining the more than 66,000 already existing. Holly, oaks, alders, strawberry trees, black walnuts, yews and willows are some of the species that will be part of this initiative, which will last until the end of May.

The presence of trees in urban areas goes far beyond aesthetics. Trees regulate urban temperatures, reduce atmospheric pollution and provide several psychological benefits, such as reducing stress and increasing general well-being. The planting of 2550 new trees is another step in Porto's journey to becoming an increasingly greener and sustainable city. The Municipality's ongoing work in expanding, monitoring and maintaining urban trees demonstrates its commitment to the health and well-being of its citizens.

At the same time, the participation of companies, schools and citizens is fundamental to the success of this initiative. Whether by collecting cork stoppers, participating in planting actions or simply raising awareness of the importance of trees, we can all make a difference!
