About LIPOR

An organization with history

LIPOR first specialized in the areas of waste treatment and recovery.

LIPOR - Municipalities Association for Sustainable Waste Management of Greater Porto - was founded in 1982 as Municipality Association and manages, recovers, and treats the municipal waste produced in eight municipalities of the Greater Porto Area: Espinho, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Valongo, and Vila do Conde. At the same time, we continue to share good practices with the population, which are supported by awareness campaigns.

Every year, we treat around 500,000 tons of municipal waste which is produced by about 1 million inhabitants.

We are upheld by modern waste management concepts which promote the adoption of integrated systems and the minimization of waste disposal in landfill. That's why we've developed an integrated management strategy based on four key components: Multimaterial Recovery, Organic Recovery, and Energy Recovery, supported by a Landfill Site to receive the waste from processes and from previously prepared waste.

This concept has grown naturally, and we continue to embrace new projects and services, thus strengthening its strategic path. The principles of a Circular Economy inspire us, hence, when managing the waste we receive daily, we add the three pillars of Sustainable Development: environmental, economic, and social.

Over the years, our work has been celebrated with different awards and recognitions, encouraging us to keep working towards a sustainable future.

We are proud of what we have achieved so far, pleased with what we are doing right now, and looking forward to the challenges ahead!
