Casa do Corim – The Place of Sustainability is today a driving force for urban regeneration, recognised across the region and a gathering point for leading initiatives in sustainability and culture, embodied in the Vision: Feel the History, Live the Nature.

The House

From the now vanished medieval Afonso's city wall of Porto, an old road once departed through the former Porta de Carros. With origins lost in time, it led towards Guimarães and later to the North of Trás‑os‑Montes, serving places like Alfena, Santo Tirso and Moreira de Cónegos. In the mid XIX century it received the designation Estrada Real (Royal Road) number 32 and in the XX century Estrada Nacional n.º 105. Today, one of its stretches is known as Rua Dom Afonso Henriques, where a building known as Casa or Quinta do Corim stands at number 2514, in the parish of Águas Santas, in the municipality of Maia.

The Casa do Corim, built in the Nasoni style, dates back to the first half of the XVIII century, when its construction began. Between 1747 and 1995 it had nine different owners. The earliest record found so far refers to Duarte Pechirim. Afterwards the family of Fernando Antunes Moura and Maria Elisa Cerejeira Pereira Bacelar Moura lived there between 1955 and 1995, when the property was acquired by the Municipality of Maia.

In the XIX century, between 1832 and 1834, it served as the Headquarters of the absolutist troops of D. Miguel during the Siege of Porto, becoming known as the Headquarters of Agoas Santas.

In 1886 it was the setting for the wedding of Aurélio Paz dos Reis, horticulturist and pioneer of cinema in Portugal, and Palmira Cândida Guimarães, daughter of the owner of the House, Commander António Fernandes Guimarães.

Its magnificent garden, with centuries‑old Camellias and traditional Portuguese tilework, offers visitors a rare sense of peace that is difficult to find in city life.

Dynamisation

Casa do Corim – the Place of Sustainability is a space dedicated to ecology, culture, art, entrepreneurship, environmental protection and citizen empowerment, while also fostering civic, social and cultural development around the major challenges of sustainable development.

This Place is built around three pillars:

INTERACTION AND IMPACT: A space for community enjoyment, promoting Sustainability and Environmental Protection, encouraging entrepreneurship, citizen empowerment and free access to culture.
CONNECTION AND NETWORKING: Interaction and the development of a collaborative Community that strengthens an Ecosystem capable of generating partnerships for building sustainable models for Society, the Sustainability Hub.
EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT: Developing and refining skills through training and qualification, sharing knowledge and tools that prepare professionals for emerging challenges in the environmental field.

The dynamisation of Casa do Corim is being promoted by LIPOR, within the framework of an Institutional partnership with the Municipality of Maia.
