Carbon and Energy

In the face of the challenges of the coming decade (embodied in the 4M Strategy) and the strategic goal of diversifying activities and businesses, we have prepared an evolution framework up to 2030. The starting point of this evolution framework assumes full compliance with the PERSU 2030 targets, including the target for preparing for reuse and recycling (PRR). In this context, and in response to new challenges, we have set a new target for 2030 through our 4M Strategy to achieve a 50% reduction in our GHG emissions.

We believe in and promote the transition to a competitive, circular, resilient, and carbon-neutral economy. There is evidence that the current (linear) model – based on the exploitation of resources (extraction of fossil fuels, raw materials, soil, and water), which are transformed, used, and then disposed of in the environment as waste or emissions – is unsustainable and underlies most environmental problems (air, water, and soil pollution, deforestation, destruction of natural habitats, and consequently, loss of biodiversity).

The challenge of climate neutrality is therefore part of a broader theme – increasing human comfort and security patterns versus finite resources – in which climate change is likely the greatest ongoing disruption. With the ambition of achieving climate neutrality by 2045, and in line with EU targets, goals and objectives are set for the 2030 horizon in the following areas:

  • Scope 1 - Direct Emissions [Waste Treatment and Valorization, Fixed Combustion (Facilities), Mobile Combustion (Transport)]
  • Scope 2 - Indirect Emissions
  • Scope 3 - Other Indirect Emissions (e.g., Purchased goods and services, Business travel, among others)
It was in this context of responsibility that, as part of our strategy, we committed to fight climate change as early as 2006. An example of this is the set of measures implemented over the past 18 years that allowed a reduction, in 2023, of 157,933 tCO2e in GHG emissions, representing a decrease of 38.6% compared to the reference year of 2006, and a decrease of 8.8% compared to 2022.

Compensations/Guarantees of Origin

Among the measures mentioned above, the pursuit of achieving zero emissions in Scope 2 since 2016 stands out. This objective was fully realized in December 2022 with the signing of an electricity supply contract for the Organic Valorization Plant, where the stakeholder explicitly committed to providing 100% renewable electricity. As a result, in 2023, 7,206 Guarantees of Origin (GdO) were canceled within the Lipor framework, ensuring that electricity consumption was 100% renewable and, consequently, Scope 2 emissions were zero (market-based approach).

Regarding fossil fuel consumption, particularly diesel, we monitor and offset the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the use of our registered fleet. This offsetting is managed by the fuel supplier, who canceled 292 tCO2e in 2023.

Additionally, as a result of our activities in 2023, the greenhouse gas emissions from CATEGORY 06 – Business Travel, related to Scope 3, were monitored and offset, totaling 84.9 tCO2e. This monitoring was conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Carbon Zero – Porto Verde Serviços methodology and ensures the sequestration of these emissions through an equivalent amount of carbon via national reforestation projects monitored by Ponto Verde Serviços.
